Our clients’ primary goal was to bring their primary bathroom out of the 1990s and give the space a fresh, updated feel. While the decade may be having a moment, this renovation focused on timeless design rather than nostalgia. Just as important, the clients wanted a bathroom that felt safe, functional, and accessible for their aging parents.
Aging in place plays a major role in adaptive bathroom design. Thoughtful planning allows families to support changing physical needs while maintaining comfort and dignity over time. We are always honored to help clients create spaces that make everyday routines easier and safer as they age.
Since the clients were already planning a remodel, they chose to incorporate accessibility from the start. To eliminate the risk of stepping over a tub shower combination, we designed a curb-less roll in shower that allows for easy entry and confident movement. This solution provides peace of mind when parents visit from out of town while also future proofing the home. A handheld shower was added to increase accessibility and simplify daily use and cleaning. The result is a bathroom that feels modern, safe, and thoughtfully designed for long term living.

One of the biggest design decisions in this bathroom renovation was removing the oversized jetted tub and replacing it with a streamlined freestanding tub. This freestanding bathtub now serves as the focal point of the room and instantly modernizes the space. Above it, a statement chandelier ties together matte black and polished nickel finishes, adding contrast and visual interest.
Fortunately, the original bathroom floor plan already functioned well. With a few strategic layout adjustments, we preserved the integrity of the space while introducing features that truly enhance daily living. This approach allowed us to focus on thoughtful upgrades without unnecessary structural changes.
To improve accessibility and flow, we replaced the double doors with a custom oversized barn door. Eliminating the door swing created more usable floor space and improved circulation. In addition, the new layout allowed us to add dedicated linen storage for towels, pool essentials, and everyday supplies. These intentional design choices support both function and style, proving that small layout changes can make a meaningful impact in an accessible bathroom design.
We maximized storage by installing custom vanities at thirty six inches tall with generous drawer storage. We favor drawers whenever possible because they improve organization, simplify daily routines, and create a clean, streamlined look. Mixing matte black and polished nickel hardware delivered an updated classic style that aligns beautifully with our clients’ aesthetic.
With ceilings this tall, we wanted to highlight the scale of the bathroom while keeping the space warm and inviting. To do that, we replaced oversized horizontal mirrors with multiple custom vertical mirrors. This change improves functionality while drawing the eye upward and visually expanding the room. In addition, the vertical mirrors help distribute light more evenly throughout the space. Sculptural wall sconces complete the design and provide layered lighting that supports both task and ambient needs.
By blending classic and modern elements along with warm and cool finishes, this bathroom received the thoughtful refresh it deserved. Every design decision balanced beauty, function, and longevity. We hope these behind the scenes details offer insight into the design journey and highlight how intentional choices can transform a space into one that feels elevated, functional, and timeless.
